Poke Poke Poke

Never again.  That’s all I have to say.  OK, let me back up a bit.  Yesterday, my psychiatrist sent me to a “rehabilitation specialist” because of the bruise on my hand.  Mind you, it’s been a week and although parts of it are healing, there are parts that look like a new bruise.  Ummmm, last week he said hematologist.  But whatever.  So I walk down the street to this doctor.  She apparently practices a mix of Eastern and Western medicine.  She didn’t seem all that concerned about the bruise.  She asked about pain and I said, yes, it hurts but so does the rest of my hand and wrist because of the tendonitis flare.  Then she asked about pain in my neck and back.  I said yes and that I was exploring the possibility of fibromyalgia.  She said from what I said, everything is consistent with that diagnosis.  She also asked if I ever had acupuncture.  I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I though it was quackery.  So I just said no, that no one had every brought up the possibility (mainly because I rely on doctors who are in the Western medicine mindset).  She said something like, “You don’t like pain?”  Uh, no.  I’m not really into pain.  She asked if she could do some acupuncture.  And I said what the hell, why not.  What’s the worst that could happen (not in those words of course).  I gotta say, it was a bigger needle than I was expecting.  I had the image in my mind of really thin needles that stay in for a while.  This was just poking.  And yes.  It hurt.  She must have really hit a nerve or something in my wrist because there was a jolt of electricity (or what felt like it) that went down into my thumb.  Interestingly, where she hit was exactly where the tendonitis pain starts.  Who knows, maybe she hit the tendon.  Then she moved to my neck and shoulders.  At least she stayed away from my spine.  Needles in my spine, now that doesn’t sound like a good thing.  That hurt just as bad or even worse.   I don’t know if it was supposed to immediately relieve the pain, but it didn’t.  And I woke up in more pain today than yesterday.  Same with my wrist and hand.  It hurts to have the splint on and it hurts to have it off.  She also prescribed some medicine.  One seems legit.  It’s a yeast extract or something.  But Wikipedia does have citations documenting its use and efficacy.  I guess it’s supposed to balance out your gut flora.  *shrug* Whatever.  I’m on antibiotics for a vaginal infection, so I won’t argue with it.  The other one is a grape seed extract (I think).  That’s more on the woo-woo side of the equation.  Since it’s easy to tell the difference, I might just skip that one.

About katm

I'm just your typical depressed donkey. I'm an abuse survivor. I deal with the pain and stiffness and other fun stuff that goes with fibromyalgia. I used to teach English for a living but because of my health, that isn't any option anymore. I love to cook and feel most in my element when I'm in the kitchen tinkering around.
